Akenov rolled off Zenovia, who clambered to her hands and knees, chest heaving, breasts swaying. She too was looking at Jane, who remained on the floor, uncertain of her next move.

“That was unexpected,” Zenovia said, glancing meaningfully at Akenov. “But perhaps you have made your point. My lovely slave does make this unpleasant task much more palatable.” She gave Jane such a steely smile that her insides lurched.

“I’m delighted you concur,” replied Akenov. He slid off the bed, and Jane couldn’t keep her eyes from his lean, sculpted torso as he walked past her. His cock, slightly full and still quite intimidating, bounced lightly. “Shall we refresh ourselves before we make a second attempt?” He’d already made his way to the steaming pool on the other side of the room.

“An excellent notion.” Zenovia gestured sharply for Jane to stand. “You will serve us, slave.”

Jane’s legs were unsteady, but she stood and made her way to the pool. Next to it was a long, low table laden with food and drink. There was an array of plump cushions and ottomans on the floor.

“An excellent idea,” Akenov said, sliding his beautiful body into the water. He groaned with pleasure as he settled into place, and Jane saw that unlike the pool in Zenovia’s private chamber, this one was only deep enough to reach one’s armpits when sitting. There was just enough room for four people to sit upright.

Zenovia eased herself into the pool. “Bring mead and cheese, Jane.”

Though her legs were barely steady enough to carry her, Jane did as she was bid. All the while she prepared their food, she thought about how to get to Zaren. How could she escape her mistress—and then how would she even find him?

I’ll find a way. I haven’t made it though so many dangers to give up now. I’m a survivor.

But now, for the first time, Jane felt truly alone. Always before, she knew Zaren was waiting for her—that he was coming for her, just as she had been going toward him.

Now…there was a large, empty hole inside her. A pit of worry and fear. Had he really given her up?

Jane used a tray to deliver an array of cheese, grapes, and bread, which she set on the floor next to the pool. Then she returned to the table for a silver goblet to give to each of them. Each time she turned her back to prepare the offerings, she managed to sneak several bites of cheese and handfuls of grapes and nuts into her mouth without either of them noticing. They tasted like ambrosia, and she was even able to take a long drink of cold minted tea to soothe the throat that had sobbed and cried and sighed so vehemently.

“Bring the drink to me,” Akenov ordered when she turned, holding a carafe of mead. He sat in the water, angled so he was submerged to his throat. His head tilted back at the edge of the pool, and his eyes were trained on Jane.
